PERIOD PREACHER | PERIOD SHAMING IN PARLIAMENT 🩸

Period Shaming in Parliament.

Period shaming refers to the act of stigmatizing and discriminating against girls and women for undergoing the natural biological process of menstruation.

This can take many forms, including negative attitudes, jokes, and insults, as well as more serious forms of discrimination, such as denying access to education or employment and limiting access to hygiene products.

Period shaming can have a profound impact on the mental health and well-being of those who experience it. It can lead to feelings of shame, embarrassment, and isolation, and can contribute to negative attitudes toward one's own body and gender identity.

Yesterday, being the 14th of February, many know it as Valentine’s Day. Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba gave notice of motion on Free Sanitary towels ending period poverty.

The senator walked to Parliament premises with blood-stained white suit pants to demonstrate the ordeal girls and women go through when experiencing their menstrual cycle.

The motion seeks to facilitate the provision of feminine hygiene products in all public schools, ensure that all schools that don't have bathrooms that facilitate privacy, cleanliness, or proper disposal of hygiene products are properly equipped, create awareness and take advocacy measures on reproductive health issues related to period poverty and teach girls about menstrual hygiene.

Surprisingly she was not supported by female senators at all. Some were convinced that senator Orwoba was faking the mess, calling her an indecent leader.

What picture are we portraying? one of them said.

Other male senators damned and shamed senator Orwoba for publicly exposing herself and that she was expected to handle the situation in a respectful and dignified manner.

I am disgusted at how they all publicly shamed her, especially the women. I believe her message is clear and simple to help protect girls and women from ever facing this humiliation and embarrassment because they simply menstruate.

Why does society act like we are a cursed generation because we menstruate?

Is it ignorance or do those who shame girls and women really have no idea of what menstruation is all about?

  • When will all this end or are we doomed for life because we menstruate?

  • Pads should be accessible for free and that's on PERIOD.

  • We would love to hear your thoughts on this, take a minute and comment below.

While at it don’t forget to Donate any amount and help a girl stay in school this year!
