PERIOD PREACHER | EQUALITY Vs EQUITY | #IWD2023 🩸

Today being International Women's Day, let's talk about two important concepts that are often used interchangeably but have distinct meanings: equality and equity. While both are essential in promoting social justice and reducing inequality, they approach the problem in different ways.

So as we celebrate International Women's Day (IWD), it is important to embrace equity and recognize that women face unique challenges and barriers that men do not. Achieving gender equality requires addressing these disparities and acknowledging that different women have different needs and experiences based on their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexuality, disability, and other factors.

Embracing equity means going beyond treating everyone the same and actively working to address systemic discrimination and bias to create more just and inclusive societies.

Equality means treating everyone the same, regardless of their differences in race, gender, religion, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics. It is the idea that everyone should have the same opportunities, resources, and access to services. However, this approach assumes that everyone starts from the same place and has the same needs, which is often not the case.

Equity, on the other hand, recognizes that people have different needs and, therefore, may require different resources or opportunities to achieve the same outcomes. It is about fairness and ensuring that everyone has what they need to succeed. It involves identifying and addressing systemic barriers and providing targeted support to those who have been historically marginalized or disadvantaged.

While equality focuses on treating everyone the same, equity focuses on ensuring fairness by providing targeted support to those who have been historically marginalized or disadvantaged.

Let's remember that achieving gender equality requires a nuanced understanding of the different experiences and needs of women and a commitment to dismantling the systemic barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential.

So, let's #EmbraceEquity for IWD 2023 and beyond and work towards creating a more equitable and just world for all!
